For the comeback in New York, creative director Sarah Burton chooses to give a voice to nature

Mycelium

On March 15, 2022 New York City was the protagonist of a great show of creativity and haute couture as it hasn’t been seen for some time: Alexander McQueen’s Fashion Show Woman MAIN Fall / Winter 2022. The East Coast capital had already been chosen twice by the maison in the 90s, 1996 and 1999, and this time the return to the big apple was strongly desired by the creative director Sarah Burton: “America and New York are always you were an important part of McQueen “so he said from behind the scenes. The show was a real show and exercise of creativity. Starting with the choice of location and the scenographic scaffolding: the Agger Fish Building in Brooklyn; in this large industrial warehouse, piles of wood reduced to dust, mulch, (obtained from fallen trees and reused for sustainable purposes) rose from the ground, flavoring the scenery, projecting the mind into the atmosphere of a forest. 85% of the collection was made directly with recycled materials, confirming once again with a clear message of rebirth the sustainable horizon towards which high fashion is heading. For her comeback on the catwalk Sarah Burton h she chose the name Mycelium. But what is mycelium and why did Burton choose this title? The mycelium is the part of the fungi found underground and in the soil all over the world. Mycelic networks can extend for kilometers and have a great importance in ecosystems because they have a profitable exchange relationship with plants that benefits both. This complex network of filaments resembles the roots of trees and intertwines with them. Recently a group of scientists decided to map these lattices to learn more about them and understand how they can help with climate change. This interconnectedness and resilience of mushrooms fascinated Burton: “We exist as single and individual entities on one level, but we are much more powerful connected to each other, to our families, to our friends, to our community. Given everything that has happened over the past couple of years, it seems more important than ever. As a community we are infinitely more able to restore, reinvent, rejuvenate – heal ”. The McQueen forest presents itself as an explosion of silhouettes, colors, textures and varying brightness in which each look asserts itself in its uniqueness.
