Matthew Williams is the new creative director of Givenchy. The 34-year-old American designer, born in Illinois and then moved to California, in recent years has chosen to also live in Italy (Ferrara and Milan). He will be responsible for men’s, women’s and high fashion collections, and will sign his first collection for the brand next October. Williams, among the prominent names of the streetwear scene, is best known for the 1017 Alyx 9SM brand (1017 as a reference to its date of birth, October 17th, and 9SM as a tribute to the name of the New York studio where his career began) of red in 2015. He started working at Alexander McQueen, with Kanye West and Lady Gaga. He created the menswear brand Been Trill, born from the collaboration with Heron Preston, Justin Saunders, Ywp and Virgil Abloh, founder of Off-White. He also led the men’s collections of Louis Vuitton. In 2015 he founded 1017 Alyx 9SM. In June 2018 he debuted at Paris fashion week with a co-ed show. He has collaborated with the likes of Dior, Nike and Mackintosh and on the Moncler Genius project. Matthew Williams will succeed Clare Waight Keller, in office from 2017 until last April.
