In 17 years, Tomas Maier has marked the identity of Bottega Veneta.

The Kering group, owner of the Italian brand, has announced the departure of its 61-year-old creative director, who had hired in 2001. The Venetian brand will not present a Bottega Veneta fashion show in September.

“It was largely the creative need of Tomas that made Bottega Veneta what it is today,” François-Henri Pinault said in a statement.

“He brought it back to the luxury scene and made it an indisputable reference point. It has magnificently sublimed the know-how of the artisans of the fashion house fueling it with its creative vision. I am deeply grateful to him and thank him personally for the work he has done and for the exceptional success he has helped to build “.

In fact, the German designer, who had previously worked for Guy Laroche, Sonia Rykiel and Hermès, has allowed the brand to develop well beyond the high-end woven leather bag, even though in 2017 the leather goods still weighed 85% of the corporate turnover of 1.177 billion euros.

In the same period, operating income was instead € 294 million. Ten years ago the turnover of Bottega Veneta was 366 million, and the current operating profit was 92 million.

Figures consistent and eloquent, but Bottega Veneta does not present today the same dynamics of Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga.
In the last year, the fashion house had managed to stabilize the business after a few delicate seasons. Claus-Dietrich Lahrs, former CEO of Hugo Boss, was appointed general manager of the Vicenza brand in October 2016 to rectify the situation.
